5 Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Diamonds - Valobra Jewelry & Antiques

We work with customers each and every day who are looking to buy the PERFECT diamond — whether as part of a set, a diamond engagement ring, a diamond necklace or any other piece, choosing the right diamond is an important decision to make! That’s why we’ve collected five of the most common questions our customers ask us

What Diamond Shape Should I Choose?

In shopping for the perfect diamond, you’ll quickly come across many different types of diamond shapes. Round, brilliant-cut diamonds are one of the most popular shapes of diamonds, followed closely by princess cut diamonds, especially for engagement rings. Both of these types of diamond shapes are highly popular because of their sparkle. They also hide inclusions (more on that below) better than other types of cuts.

If you want a cut that’s more non-traditional but still rooted in tradition, a cushion cut or an oval cut is a unique and trendy look, but if you want to push the envelope even further, go for a pear-cut or marquise shape.

Why Do Certain Diamonds Sparkle More Than Others?

This is a great question, and your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you! Some diamonds really do sparkle more than others! The shape is the biggest underlying factor in terms of how well the diamond reflects light. Round cut diamonds sparkle most, followed by princess cut diamonds. That’s not to say that other types of cuts won’t sparkle brilliantly, it’s just that the effect is more subdued.

How Do I Know He/She Will Absolutely Love It?

This is probably the most important question and we understand that in making a purchase like this, you want to be sure the recipient absolutely adores it. If you’re not sure, consider the person’s taste in jewelry or their unique style. Do they like big, bold and unique pieces or something more classic and traditional? Of course, the experts at Valobra Master Jewelers are also here to help you every step of the way so that you can make a purchase that you feel confident about!

What are Diamond Inclusions?

Diamond inclusions are natural defects that every diamond has. These can appear in the form of small dots, markings or air bubbles. The smaller and fewer they are, the higher the clarity of the diamond. However, you’ll be glad to know that oftentimes these inclusions are so small, that they can only be seen with a jeweler’s magnifying glass (called a loupe).

In evaluating different grades of diamonds, you’ll often see terminology that helps you better understand diamond inclusions. For example, mid-range diamonds are usually graded SI (Slightly Included) but balance affordability with beauty.

Which Matters More, Size or Quality?

You may be surprised to learn that diamonds are partially valued by size and partially by quality. The good news is that your diamond doesn’t have to be huge nor perfect in order to be beautiful.
